Community Life

History of Stanwood

Stanwood was settled during the years of 1870 to 1890. Initially called Centerville, it was the first Norwegian settlement in what is now Washington state. The principal industries during those two decades were agriculture and logging with agriculture continuing to be a major industry today.

Stanwood offers the safety and friendliness of a rural community with proximity to Seattle's urban amenities.

Facts and Statistics

Stanwood is part of a rapidly growing area of NW Snohomish County. Unincorporated areas and towns in the area include Warm Beach, Seven Lakes, Lakewood, Smokey Point, Island Crossing, Silvana, Sunday Lake, Norman, Florence, Cedarhome, Lake Ketchum, Freeborn and Victoria. Camano Island, to the west, is the smaller of the two major islands of Island county.
